Golden Oldies

I’ve always wanted to be in a band. Well, maybe not always.  Three years of piano lessons during one’s formative years do not a musician make. And performing on stage in front of people at recitals caused such a state of stage fright that your hands turned ice-cold and your worst nightmare came true on stage when you forgot the notes and could do nothing else except bang a few random notes on the piano until it finally occurred to you that you could stop and go on to the 2nd piece whose notes you could remember. Then there was Continue reading

New Year’s Eve Eve Eve

December 21st came and went, the world didn’t end, and there are no more shopping days till Xmas 2012.  And just a few more days till 2012’s last gasp. Once upon a time, “what-are-you-doing-New-Year’s” demanded a definitive answer.  But it’s not so important anymore. No plans are necessary; we’ll find out when we get there. So I don’t know where I’m going to ring in the New Year, but I DO know where this middle-aged rocker is going to be on the last Saturday night of 2012—and that’s at Ziggy’s for Mike Bennett and the “B” String All Stars annual Continue reading

December in the Arts District

It’s December 2012.  If the Mayan Calendar is to be believed, something seriously cataclysmic is supposed to happen on December 21st.  The Doomsday Preppers seem to be pretty well prepped.  Gloom and Doom have settled in for the Believers.  Some of the Believers believe it may not happen after all.  Some people think it’s already happening, what with such events as Hurricane Sandy unleashing itself upon New York, New Jersey, and neighboring states. What does it all mean?   We’ll find out when we get there.  In the meantime, maybe you’d better get your Christmas shopping done early.  And the upcoming Continue reading
