October Arts on Sunday Series Festivals

Arts on Sunday Festival

The Arts on Sunday festivals sponsored by AFAS, Art for Art’s Sake, continue to be one of my favorite series of events in Winston-Salem. The festivals take place every Sunday in October from 1 to 5 pm. The 500 and 600 blocks of Trade Street, along with a portion of the 200 block of 6th Street is the site for all the action.  The streets are lined with artists and craftspeople showing and selling their creations. Many of the shops and galleries in this area are open as well. Then there is live entertainment, a well managed kids area, chalk Continue reading

Arts On Sunday Featured in Today’s Relish

arts on sunday

Mark Sunday, May 4th, from 1 to 5 pm, on your things-to-do calendar. Same with all the other Sundays in May. The 2014 edition of Arts on Sunday opens Sunday with a street full of exhibitors and a “Blues-a-Palooza” of three bands: the Twin City Buskers, The Low Counts, and Wezo and the Mofos. A bandstand will be set up at the intersection of Sixth and Trade streets. It will be held each Sunday in May and again in October. Turning Japanese

The First Friday Gallery Hop spirit often carries over to Saturday, when art patrons return to the Arts District to wine and dine, beer and cheer, and shop-shop-shop. There are often other special events scheduled as well. On this upcoming Saturday, from 3-5pm, go to the Bubbling Well Bead & Tea Bar for their “Kimono Tea.” Join in the discussion about Japanese kimonos and textiles while enjoying Japanese teas available at the Bubbling Well. Your hosts: Olivia Camden Mackie, fiber artist, owner of Silk Peacock and KIMONO COLLECTION and partner at Fiber Co. on 6th and Trade; and Julie Reynolds, Continue reading

The Merry Month of May

MAYbe winter is finally over. MAYbe it will rain only during the week and be sunny and warm on the weekends. MAYbe. One thing for sure is that the activity meter jumps significantly during the month of May. It all starts this weekend. Friday, May 2nd is the DADA-sponsored First Friday Gallery Hop. New shows inside, performance art outside, and lots of people crawling the blocked-off area that includes the 500-600 block of Trade Street; the 200 block of 6th Street;and the 500 block of Liberty St. And there is at least one DADA member in the 800 block of Continue reading

Blue Moon Gallery Hop is Friday May 10th

Why Blue Moon Gallery Hop? It has nothing to do with the lunar cycle. DADA holds a Gallery Hop on the First Friday of every month, all year ’round. We had a great hop last week during Habitat for Humanity’s BirdFest. The upcoming weekend is the Centennial Celebration in honor of the merging of the towns Winston and Salem to form Winston-Salem. The Celebration planners wanted to hold a special Gallery Hop on Friday during the celebration weekend (May 9-12). Which makes 2 Gallery Hops in one month, which happens once in a Blue Moon. So now you get it. Continue reading

Happy Easter Monday!

There are 2 places in the world that celebrate Easter Monday: North Carolina and the U.S.Virgin Islands. Why?? They say that a baseball game between two rival teams is the reason North Carolina made Easter Monday a holiday.  I don’t know why it’s a holiday in the USVI, other than the fact that, if a holiday is celebrated SOMEWHERE in the world, they celebrate it in the USVI too. Both places are home to me.I was “bahn heah” in North Carolina; was an ex-pat in St.John for 15 years; and  returned a few years ago to my native NC–a happy accident, Continue reading
