The Merry Merry Month of May 2015

MayDay, Friday May 1st saw the monthly DADA Gallery Hop. It was a beautiful evening and lots of people came out to enjoy gallery show openings.and artist receptions.

2015 Arts on Sunday - MayArts on Sunday

Sunday, May 3rd, was the first of this year’s Arts on Sunday festival series, featuring to-die-for rock and roll by the area’s finest rock and rollers that performed as the Luxuriant Sedans. Plus dozens of artists and craftsmen lined the 500 and 600 blocks of Trade with as good a variety of handmade goods as you’ll find anywhere, all in one place, on a Sunday afternoon under beautiful blue skies and pleasantly warm temperatures. Other dates and themes for Arts on Sunday are May 10 (Mother’s Day; May 17 (Rhythm of Art), and May 24th (Sunday Get Down). There is a Kid’s Corner every week at this series of AFAS Group events.

Hope Du Jour Crisis Control Benefit

Tuesday, May 5th, Cinco de Mayo, is also the annualHope Du Jour, where many of Winston-Salem’s restaurants will be donating a portion of their proceeds to benefit Crisis Control Ministry. Trade Street area eateries participating include 6th and Vine Restaurant (209 W 6th St.); District Rooftop Bar and Grille (770 Liberty View Court); Black Mountain Chocolate (732 N.Trade St.); Finnigan’s Wake (620 N.Trade St.); Mary’s Gourmet Diner (723 N.Trade St.); Mission Pizza Napoletana (707 N.Trade St.); and Sweet Potatoes (529 N.Trade St.). So treat yourself to a lunch or dinner at any of these restaurants and feel good about supporting a neighborhood business as well as a worthy cause.

Mast General Store Grand Opening

The wait is over! Mast General Store, at 516 N.Trade St.,opens its doors on Wednesday May 6th!

At the request of Mast General Store and the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership, the block of Trade Street between Fifth and Sixth streets will be closed to vehicles from 8:30 to 10:30 AM for the opening celebration which includes a ribbon-cutting at 9:15 AM. Detours will be posted.  The entire community is welcome to come out and celebrate this great new addition to Trade Street, the Arts District, and Downtown Winston-Salem.

What many of us consider the most exciting event of all happens on Saturday, May 9th. ARTitivity on the Green opens at 1:00 PM, with the dedication ceremony scheduled for 2:00 PM.  The city’s first Art Park, with its location on Liberty Street between 6th and 7th Streets, provides a cultural bridge between the Arts District and the Innovation Quarter.


Arts on Sunday: May 10th

And we look forward to another Arts on Sunday at the end of the week (or the beginning of next week?!) The Mother’s Day edition features entertainment by Fortune and To All My Dear Friends. Roses will be given out to all the mothers in attendance.
